How to Volunteer in Cambodia

How to find volunteer opportunities in Cambodia

Although a small country, Cambodia has much to offer in terms of volunteering opportunities. While planning your trip abroad, you may want to consider the kind of places you would like to explore. In cities such as Phnom Penh (the bustling capital) and Siem Reap (the gateway to Angkor Wat), you can teach English to various communities, mostly to underprivileged children but also to high school students and young women. If you prefer the roads less travelled, you can empower the populations in rural Cambodia by teaching English, sports or computer skills, as well as by taking part in agriculture projects. You may even decide to experience life in both the city and the countryside! In any case, no matter where you choose to go, as a volunteer you will always be greeted with a warm welcome in Cambodia.

Best time to volunteer in Cambodia

Volunteering in Cambodia is a great idea, no matter what time of the year; however you might find that certain months are more ideal for you than others. For instance, between the months of April and June, the climate gets warm and humid but this also means fewer tourists and less likelihood of rainy weather. Often this is also the best time to find low cost airfare. In April, the Khmer New Year is celebrated and this is the biggest holiday in Cambodia so it’s certainly one you would be lucky to be a part of!

Essential information about Cambodia

Before registering for any volunteer trip to Cambodia, make sure to have the appropriate travel documents which include a valid passport as well as an E-visa ("E" stands for employment, whether it is paid or not) which can be purchased online. As for the cost of living, it is extremely low in comparison to Western standards and it is not unreasonable to be able to live quite comfortably on around $20 a day. Many volunteers stay with host families while volunteering which gives them a chance to experience the true local ways and also learn a little Khmer, the official language of Cambodia. However long you stay, a volunteering experience in Cambodia will be eye-opening and may even inspire a second visit.
