This funds shall be used to carryout the following:
1. Training on forest conservation
This project shall consist in a capacity-building workshop with the community and 50 youths on the best tree planting techniques, treatment, bio-monitoring and sustainable forest management approaches towards the conservation of the forest. This workshop will be based on a face-to-face learning approach the use of video learning and sharing of experience of success stories from other countries will be projected to the youths to effectively motivate their drive. Further a question and answer session which is inclusive with be top of the agenda. The youths will also the monitoring of the tree planting sessions and its survival. The number of trees planted will be allocated numbers to ensure effective monitoring. (3 weeks).
2. Planting 1000 trees in degraded portions of the water points and/or catchments
The next steps will be land preparation, involving clearing (2 week) and the digging of 1000 holes for tree planting (2 weeks). These activities will be implemented in close collaboration with the Chomba community. In addition; organic fertilizers will be applied to the dug holes using the technique of mulching, in order to ensure the environment benign growth of these trees (2 weeks). The community shall assist in the execution of this phase. The trained youths and the community will then plant 1000 water-loving trees (2 weeks).
3. Environmental education and sensitization in school
Environmental awareness activities will take place in 2 schools for a period of 6-7months. 200 Children will be sensitized on the importance of wildlife habitats, the reasons why to conserve them and the best ways to ensure a sustainable forestry and biodiversity conservation. Lessons will be supported by outdoor activities and the creation of environment clubs. We shall also carry out environmental competitions/Radio talks, drama amongst clubs created in the 2 schools. This is to evaluate how well the children must have understood our Training sessions. Further we will have a face to face learning with the teachers and also educating them on uprising environmental issues, how to effectively adapt and mitigate locally. This will also ensure the
promotion of our progress at the end of the project to guarantee proper follow-up.
Environmental Education Booklets will be design with creative arts to depict the need to protect and connect to mother nature. This will be distributed to the kids.
4. Participatory follow-up and supervision of planted trees
trained community’s youth will take care of the planted trees to ensure their growth.
